The Evolution of Reiki in a Connected World
When I first started offering distance Reiki, I noticed something interesting. Most people were curious — but also quietly skeptical. They would ask, “How can healing work if you’re not even in the same room?” And honestly, I understand that question. I asked it myself once.
Over the years, I’ve watched more and more clients open up to remote healing, especially during the pandemic when everyone was at home. It seems that since then life has become even busier and more fast-paced than ever. Between work, family responsibilities, health challenges, and long to-do lists, many people simply don’t have the time or energy to travel for in-person sessions. Distance Reiki has become a gentle solution that fits into real life.
What continues to amaze me is how powerful these sessions can be. I’ve seen emotional releases, deep relaxation, and meaningful shifts happen even when miles separate me from the person receiving Reiki. It’s a reminder that healing doesn’t depend on walls, rooms, or physical proximity — it depends on connection, intention, and energy.
If you’ve been curious about distance Reiki but aren’t quite sure how it works or whether it’s right for you, you’re not alone. In this article, I’ll walk you through what distance Reiki really is, what you can expect from a session, and why so many people are choosing this form of healing today.

What is Distance Reiki?
Distance Reiki is the practice of sending healing energy to a person, animal, or even a situation without being physically present with the recipient. As a Reiki practitioner trained in Level II or higher, I use specific Reiki symbols to connect with you energetically, no matter where you are in the world. The healing energy flows just as powerfully as it would during an in-person session.
Think of it this way: when you send love and healing thoughts to someone you care about, those intentions travel through space and time. Distance Reiki works in a similar way, but with the focused power of Reiki symbols and training to direct universal life force energy exactly where it’s needed.
How Does Distance Reiki Work?
The foundation of distance Reiki lies in the understanding that energy is not limited by physical space or time. In Reiki II training, practitioners learn to work with the Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen symbol, which translates roughly to “no past, no present, no future”. This powerful symbol creates a bridge that allows healing energy to flow across any distance.
During a distant Reiki session, I establish a connection with you using this symbol along with the other Reiki symbols. Some practitioners use a photograph of the client, while others simply hold the person’s name and intention in their awareness. The Reiki energy knows exactly where to go and what is needed for your highest good.
From a perspective that considers quantum physics and energy healing, we are all connected through an invisible web of energy. Distance Reiki taps into this interconnectedness. Just as radio waves travel through the air to bring music to your car or cell phone signals connect your voice to someone miles away, Reiki energy moves through the universal field that connects us all.
The Benefits of Distance Reiki Healing
One of the biggest reasons people choose distance Reiki is simple: it fits into real life. You don’t need to drive anywhere, sit in traffic, or rearrange your entire day. You can receive healing in your own space — where your body already feels safest and most relaxed.
Here are some of the most common ways distance Reiki supports clients:
Pain and Physical Discomfort
Many people use distant Reiki to help manage chronic pain, tension, or physical discomfort. While Reiki isn’t a replacement for medical care, it often helps the body relax and shift into a state that supports our natural healing abilties.
Emotional Healing and Stress Relief
Distance Reiki can be especially supportive during emotionally difficult times — grief, anxiety, heartbreak, or major life changes. Clients often report feeling calmer, lighter, and more emotionally balanced after sessions.
Support During Medical Treatment
Some people schedule distance Reiki alongside medical treatments or recovery periods. It can help reduce stress, ease nervousness, and provide emotional comfort during challenging health experiences.
Accessibility and Convenience
For those dealing with illness, mobility limitations, or fatigue, distance Reiki makes healing accessible without the physical effort of leaving home. This alone can be deeply relieving.
While scientific research on Reiki is still developing, many clients continue to seek it out because of the very real benefits they feel in their bodies and emotions. Sometimes personal experience becomes the most convincing teacher! Find more research here.
What to Expect During a Distance Reiki Session
If you’ve never experienced distance Reiki before, it’s completely normal to feel a little unsure about what will happen. The good news is that the process is simple, gentle, and designed to help you relax.
Before your session begins, I usually suggest finding a quiet, comfortable place where you won’t be interrupted. This might be your bed, a couch, or your favorite chair. Some people like to create a calming atmosphere with soft lighting, candles, or music, while others prefer silence. There’s no right or wrong way — what matters most is that you feel comfortable.
Once the session starts, your only “job” is to rest and receive. You don’t need to concentrate or try to make anything happen. Many people close their eyes and focus on slow, easy breathing. Others simply allow themselves to drift into a deeply relaxed state.
During the session, which typically lasts between 30 and 60 minutes, experiences can vary. You might notice:
-
A sense of calm or deep relaxation
-
Warmth, tingling, or gentle sensations in the body
-
Feeling very grounded or very light
-
Emotional release, such as tears or sudden relief (Don’t worry – this is normal)
-
Falling asleep (which is very common and completely okay)
Some people feel a lot. Others feel very little in the moment — and both experiences are normal. Just remember – Reiki is still working whether you consciously notice sensations or not.
After the session, I usually follow up with you to share any impressions or insights that came through and to hear about your experience. I recommend giving yourself a few quiet minutes afterward to re-ground, drink some water, and ease back into your day. Many clients describe feeling calmer, clearer, and more centered — sometimes immediately, and sometimes gradually over the next day or two.
Is Distance Reiki as Effective as In-Person Sessions?
I’ll be honest — when I first learned distance Reiki, I had doubts. Even after years of hands-on practice, part of me wondered how healing energy could work when I wasn’t physically in the same room as the client.
Then I started experiencing it for myself.
One of my early remote sessions surprised me. The client later described sensations in the exact areas I had focused on during the healing. They didn’t know what I was working on — and I hadn’t shared anything beforehand. That moment shifted something in me. It helped me trust what Reiki teachers had been saying all along: energy isn’t limited by physical distance.
Over time, I’ve noticed that some people actually relax more deeply during distant sessions. They’re at home. They’re comfortable. There’s no pressure to “do anything right.” That relaxed state often allows the healing energy to flow more easily.
Is it identical to an in-person session? Not exactly. The experience can feel different. But different doesn’t mean it’s not working. In many cases, it’s just as powerful — sometimes even more so — because the person receiving Reiki feels safe and supported in their own space. Also, the practitioner may feel more relaxeed which helps the Reiki energy flow better.
If you’re feeling unsure, that’s completely normal. You don’t need blind faith to benefit from Reiki. You only need openness and curiosity. The experience itself tends to answer the question better than any explanation ever could. Because of this, I recommend that everyone try distant Reiki at least once.
How to Prepare for Your Distance Reiki Session
To get the most out of your virtual Reiki session, here are some simple preparation tips:
Create a Sacred Space: Find a quiet area where you won’t be interrupted. Turn off your phone or put it on silent. Let family members or roommates know that you need uninterrupted time.
Get Comfortable: Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Have blankets, pillows, or anything else that will help you relax fully.
Set Your Intention: Before the session begins, take a moment to set an intention for your healing. This might be something like “I am open to receiving healing energy for my highest good” or a specific intention related to what you’re working on.
Hydrate: Drink water before and after your session to help the energy flow and support your body’s natural detoxification processes.
Be Open and Receptive: Release any expectations about what should happen. Trust that the Reiki energy will flow where it’s needed, and simply allow yourself to receive.
After your session, give yourself a few minutes to slowly return to your day. Drink more water, journal about your experience if you’d like, and be gentle with yourself. You might feel energized, relaxed, emotional, or even a bit tired. All of these responses are normal.
Why Distance Reiki is Growing in Popularity
The rise in popularity of distance Reiki healing reflects our changing world. More people are recognizing that wellness and healing don’t have to be limited by geography or schedules. Virtual healing sessions offer flexibility that fits into our modern lives.
The global events of recent years have also shifted our perspective on what’s possible through virtual connections. People who might have been skeptical about receiving energy healing remotely have discovered firsthand that it truly works.
Distance Reiki also makes it possible to work with a practitioner anywhere in the world. You’re not limited to the Reiki practitioners in your local area. If you feel drawn to work with a specific teacher or healer, distance sessions make that possible regardless of where either of you lives.
For people dealing with chronic illness, anxiety, or physical limitations that make it difficult to leave home, distance Reiki provides much-needed support and healing. It’s a way to receive care without the added stress of travel or being in an unfamiliar environment.
The Science and Mystery of Distance Healing
When people ask about the science behind distance Reiki, I like to answer honestly: modern science is still catching up to what many healing traditions have known for centuries. There isn’t yet a way to measure the “energy” in the context of Reiki energy.
There have been studies exploring Reiki’s effects on stress, relaxation, and emotional wellbeing, and many show encouraging results. At the same time, Reiki doesn’t fit neatly into conventional scientific models. It doesn’t behave like a medication you can measure in milligrams or track with a single lab test. That can make it harder to study using traditional research methods. Also, Reiki isn’t something that can be controlled by the pharmaceutical industry so there isn’t much research money going into Reiki studies.
Some people draw parallels between Reiki and concepts in quantum physics, such as interconnectedness and non-local effects. While these ideas are interesting, I believe it’s important not to oversimplify or exaggerate scientific claims. Reiki doesn’t need dramatic explanations to be meaningful.
What I trust most comes from experience — both my own and that of the many clients I’ve worked with over the years. When someone reports sleeping better for the first time in months, feeling calmer after weeks of anxiety, or experiencing emotional release during a session, that matters. Healing isn’t always something you can put on a chart, but it’s something you can feel.
There’s also an element of mystery to Reiki, and I see that as a beautiful thing. Not everything that supports healing has to be fully understood to be effective. We all know that a good hug can be healing but we don’t understand exactly how it works.
In my experience, distance Reiki works best when people approach it with openness rather than needing to “prove” anything. You don’t have to believe in every theory behind it — you simply need to be willing to receive and observe what happens for you.
Getting Started with Distance Reiki
If you’re interested in experiencing distance Reiki for yourself, the first step is finding a qualified practitioner. Look for someone who has completed at least Reiki Level II training (which includes distance healing techniques) and ideally has experience conducting remote sessions.
Many practitioners, including myself, offer distance healing sessions regularly. You can schedule a session just as you would any other appointment, and the practitioner will guide you through what to expect.
If you’re already a Reiki practitioner or interested in becoming one, consider taking Reiki II training to learn how to send distance healing. This opens up beautiful opportunities to support friends and family members who live far away, or to build a practice that includes remote clients.
You can also send distance Reiki to situations, past events that still cause pain, or even to your future self before an important event. The applications are truly limitless.
Reiki Works in Mysterious and Wonderful Ways
Distance Reiki healing is a testament to the interconnected nature of our universe and the power of universal life force energy. It transcends physical boundaries and offers healing, comfort, and peace to anyone, anywhere.
Whether you’re dealing with stress, anxiety, chronic pain, or simply seeking deeper relaxation and wellbeing, distance Reiki provides a gentle yet powerful way to support your healing journey. You don’t need to understand exactly how it works to benefit from it. All you need is an open heart and a willingness to receive.
As our world becomes increasingly connected through technology, it’s beautiful to know that we can also connect through the timeless, boundless energy of Reiki. No matter where you are, healing is always available to you.
If you’d like to experience a distance Reiki session, I invite you to reach out and schedule your first appointment. Let the healing energy flow to you, wherever you are in the world.
Sending you healing light and Reiki blessings,
Sharon
How do I Learn Reiki?
Reiki is an ancient healing art passed down from teacher to student. You can learn Reiki in person or online. Finding an experienced Reiki teacher is important. The first level is Reiki I where you will learn how to do self-Reiki and hands-on Reiki healing for others. Reiki II training teaches you the symbols and techniques for distance healing.
How Does Distance Reiki Work?
Distance Reiki works through the use of the Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen symbol, which practitioners learn in Reiki Level II. This symbol creates an energetic bridge that allows healing energy to flow across any distance. The practitioner sets the intention to connect with the recipient, and the Reiki energy travels through the universal field that connects all beings.
Is Distance Reiki as Effective as In-person Reiki?
Yes! Distance Reiki is just as effective as in-person sessions. Energy is not limited by physical space. Many people find they can relax even more deeply during distance sessions because they’re in the comfort of their own home. The healing energy flows where it’s needed regardless of physical proximity.
