Using the World of Objects to get into a State of Being
Pick up a small object near you. Give the object all of your attention. Study it. Appreciate it. Use your sense perceptions.
- Does it feel smooth or rough?
- Does it feel heavy or light?
- What color is it?
- What shape is it?
- Touch it to the back of your hand. Is it soft or hard?
- How do you use the object?
- What can you appreciate about the object?
Thank the object for its existence. Inanimate objects have a life of their own. You can do this exercise anytime to help you get into a state of Being.
Using Your Breath and Your Body to connect to your State of Being
Placing our attention on our breathing and our inner body helps us to become present. Our thoughts will slow down and our minds will become still.
- Begin to notice the air coming in through your nostrils. Does it feel cool?
- Notice the air leaving your body. Is it warm?
- Feel the rise and fall of your chest and or belly with each breath.
- Place your hand on your thigh. Can you sense the warmth of your skin?
- Place your hand on your heart, or a finger on your pulse. Can you feel or sense your heartbeat?
Thank your body for all the systems it operates, and for being on auto-pilot. You can do this exercise anytime to help you get into a state of Being.
Using the Natural World to Gain a State of Being
If you are able, go outside. If not, look out the window at trees, the sky, or clouds. Or you can gaze at an indoor plant or cut flowers.
- Is the wind blowing? Can you feel it on your skin? Is it blowing soft or hard?
- Is the sun shining? Are there shadows?
- Do you hear birds or other creatures?
- Are there clouds in the sky?
- How does the air feel? Dry or moist?
- What color is the plant or tree? Does the soil around it feel soft and rich?
- Touch the plant, tree, or flower. Is it smooth or rough?
- Is there an aroma?
Give your full attention to the natural world. Appreciate its features. Really focus your gaze on it, as if it is the first time you have ever seen it.
Give thanks to the natural world around you. You can do this exercise anytime to help you get into a state of Being.
Using Empty Space as a Means for a State of Being
Think for a moment of the space between things in the room.
Now think about if your room/home and all the furniture in it disappeared. Think about the space that would be left behind. See yourself sitting in the space.
Now imagine that all the manmade things in the world disappeared – all buildings, roads, cars, etc. See yourself sitting in the space.
Now imagine the planet called Earth disappeared. See yourself in the space, literally out in Space floating in the Universe.
Finally, imagine the universe disappears. Where would “you” go?
Be aware of the empty space from which all “things” reside. Give thanks for this space. You can do this exercise anytime to help you get into a state of Being.

Loved this! I definitely have not been just being enough lately. But, I usually read in the early morning with my cup of coffee but the past few days I’ve been sitting in bed, drinking my coffee and practicing mindfulness.
Thanks, Greta! Great idea to start off the day with mindfulness.
